Easter 2022

St. Joseph's Galway did an Easter hunt before the holidays. The Easter Bunny also visited and brought eggs for the pupils. We decorated our room and put up an Easter Tree.

Thornfield in Northern Ireland's Year 8/9 class in  followed a recipe with Mrs Finnegan (Home Economics Teacher).  They had fun eating some before they took them home.

Thornfield Northern Ireland - St. Patrick's Day 

In Thornfield Miss Hutchinson's  Year 5/6 (8, 9 and 10 year olds) have been learning in class about St Patrick.  They then used what they had learnt to make short video clips.  They used their computer skills and knowledge to explore the internet express their ideas, exchange and exhibit their work to their classmates.

Senior 6 in St. Joseph's Galway have been busy making St. Patricks Day artwork. The whole school dressed up and we had a parade to the school next door. It was lots of fun. Junior 3 sent St. Patricks Day cards to the other Erasmus schools. 

Pink T-shirt Day - ​Croatia

In Croatia the last Wednesday in February marks a Pink T-shirt Day, that day is declared to be the national day against peer violence. In our Centre, The Pink T-shirt Day was marked by wearing pink T-shirts to school on Wednesday 16th of February, by taking photographs in a pink T-shirt frame, holding workshops and doing various suiting activities. The workshops and activities were held by subject and class teachers between 14th and 18th of February since the students had the second part of their winter break from 21st till 25th of February.

Safe Internet Day- Croatia

Every year, the second Tuesday of the month is a Safer Internet Day. The students participated in various activities to mark the day.
Fifth and sixth year students wrote website titles, that they visit most, in the WordArt tool. 
Fifth year students played various games connected to internet security. 

Sixth grade students made digital posters about personal data, and they watched an educational video about protecting personal data.
Students of 7th A class celebrated the Safer Internet Day by playing games about rules of conduct on the internet and by making posters about dangers of the internet and cyber bullying.
Eight grade students participated in a workshop about fake news where they tried to recognise a fake news article and at the end they had to create a fake news themselves. They played a Kahoot quiz about internet safety.

Karneval - Slovenia & Croatia

In Croatia  masquerades fell on Tuesday, February 1st. The students were not in school, but they made a presentation about customs in Croatia. Click to take a look. Karneval in Croatia.

WHO IS KURENT?
Kurent's origins have not yet been fully elucidated, but the old belief is that he is a demon that haunts winter and invites spring into the land. This magical ethnographic character wakes up every year from candlestick to ashtray in the vicinity of Ptuj, when he brings happiness and a good harvest with visits to homesteads and displays.

MAKING A KURENT MASK - WORKSHOP FOR YOUR STUDENTS
(video on how to make a Kurent mask – ( Mentors Mrs. Msc Jasna Veber Zazula, Mrs. Sabina Dokl, students of dr. Ljudevita Pivka Ptuj school)

We invite you to make a Kurent mask with your students  in the school. Take a picture or recorded a video of your  work and  present your work in the blog and webpage. 
We are sure that you will succeed perfectly.

The proces of making the kurent mask
  1. What you  need:
  2. Take an empty egg box.
  3. Cut it in half.
  4. The empty part of the box will be used to make a mask.
  5. Prepare the other half of the box and scissors.
  6. Cut the part that will be used to make eyes and a nose.
  7. Glue the part which has been cut on your base part of the box.
  8. Now we have our base.
  9. Tear out small pieces from the rest of the egg box.
  10. With hot glue glue the pieces around the part where eyes are.
  11. Be careful when using hot glue.
  12. Glue…
  13. …as long as you fill in the left, right and the upper part of your base.
  14. Draw a tongue on our base with a marker.
  15. Cut the area around the tongue.
  16. Prepare wooden sticks.
  17. You need one long stick and two shorter ones.
  18. Glue the sticks with hot glue in a position above the head.
  19. Colour the Kurent's tongue and cheeks .
  20. Decorate the base with accessories .
  21. Make whiskers, nose hair and teeth.
  22. Make whiskers out dried grass.
  23. Connect the fibres into a sheaf .
  24. Use white beads and string to make teeth.
  25. With the help of a needle string beads on a string.
  26. You can also use white beans instead of beads to make teeth.
  27. The mask should look like this…
  28. …and that.
  29. Prepare chicken and pheasant feathers.
  30. The longest feathers should be glued on the top.
  31. You can also include peacock feathers which will make Kurent more colourful.
  32. Put the last two plumes on the sides- each on one side.
  33. The red tongue should be dried by now. Colour the outer part with white and draw a plaid pattern in the middle.
  34. Colour the eyes.
  35. Like this - with black and white.
  36. Colourful ribbons are now missing.
  37. Prepare crepe paper of differ colours and cut it in long pieces.
  38. Glue the ribbons on the top stick. They should reach its eyes.
  39. Draw a black pupil on the eyes and add nose hair out of sheep's fur in the nose.

 St. Bridgets Day - Galway, Ireland

In Senior 6 Kayleigh's class learned all about St. Brigid. This day falls on the 1st of February every year. From 2023 this day will be recognized as a public holiday to celebrate the women of Ireland.

Chineese New Year - Thronfield in Belfast NI and St. Joseph's,  Galway, Ireland.

Thornfield pupils completed activities  after learned about Chinese New Year.

We watched two Powerpoints on Chinese New Year and why the colour red is important in chinese culture.

After that we cut out and decorated Chinese Lanterns, we made a Chinese Dragon each whilst some were doing this others played the games Dominoes and/or a version of using chopsticks to pick up small cubes (food)!
Senior 6 in Galway made Tiger Fans for Chinese New Year.
